Chapter 9: The Mother-in-Law Hired a Nutritionist (Part 2)
Outside the door stood an exceptionally beautiful young woman, wearing a grass-green slip dress, with a white shawl draped over her shoulders. Her lips were painted with a vibrant red lipstick—the very shade Lin Yan disliked most. Her skin wasn’t very pale but had a healthy wheat tone, and surprisingly, the bold red suited her exquisitely.
“Excuse me, is this Ms. Li’s residence?” The beauty tilted her head slightly, tugging at her voluminous flaxen curls, smiling warmly as she asked.
“Ms. Li?” Lin Yan blinked, momentarily taken aback. “You must have the wrong place.”
The woman took out her phone from the backpack slung over her shoulder, browsed through it briefly, then raised it to show Lin Yan. “Are you sure? This is number 15, Biluo Garden, right?”
“Yes, it is.” Lin Yan’s eyes flicked to the woman’s heels—well over ten centimeters high—and she swallowed nervously. “But, who exactly are you looking for?”
“Yan Yan, who is it?” Leng Mohan came over from the dining table, frowning as he looked outside.
At the sight of Leng Mohan, the woman outside hesitated briefly. Her eyes, clearly enhanced with purple contact lenses, sparkled vividly before she lifted a charming smile and extended her hand. “Hello, I’m Ye Ye, the nutritionist Ms. Li invited.”
“Please come in,” Leng Mohan said.
Without shaking the woman’s hand, Leng Mohan drew Lin Yan closer into his embrace, then stepped aside to open the door wider. He whispered softly near Lin Yan’s ear, “Mom asked her to come.”
The warmth of his breath made Lin Yan’s ears flush again. Only then did she realize her mother-in-law’s maiden name was Li; the family name was Leng, so everyone always called her Mrs. Leng, forgetting her original surname.
Ye Ye smiled awkwardly, withdrawing her hand and stepping inside on her high heels. Lin Yan wanted to call after her, intending to offer a more comfortable pair of slippers, but Leng Mohan tugged her gently, and she swallowed the words back.
“Aunt, long time no see. How have you been?” Ye Ye opened her arms and embraced Mrs. Leng as soon as she entered.
“Ye Ye, you finally came! Have you been having too much fun abroad all these years?” Mrs. Leng said, offering a polite hug before settling down.
Ye Ye glanced at Leng Mohan, then asked, “Aunt, who are these two?”
Mrs. Leng tapped Ye Ye’s forehead with a finger. “You silly girl, you don’t even recognize your brother Mohan? Oh, and this is Lin Yan, your brother Mohan’s wife. They’ve been married for two years now, but there’s been no progress, so I asked you to come help with some adjustments. Didn’t you study nutrition abroad?”
Hearing her mother-in-law say this, Lin Yan’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment; she didn’t know where to put her hands. Leng Mohan frowned slightly and said, “Mom, there’s no need to discuss our private matters with an outsider.”
Mrs. Leng smiled at Leng Mohan and glanced at Ye Ye. “Ye Ye’s not a stranger either. You know, when Ye Ye was just born, your uncle Ye was already trying to arrange a childhood engagement for you two. If that had happened, you might be husband and wife now. But that wild girl Ye Ye ran off abroad quietly when she was just a child.”
Leng Mohan looked at Lin Yan. She listened quietly, saying nothing, carefully peeling an apple with a fruit knife, not even raising her eyelids.
