A tremor I could not suppress rippled through my body. His caress was like a venomous temptation, instantly numbing my senses.

"Tell me, why?"

Even though the meaning behind his touch was unmistakable, I still had to ask, still longed to hear it from his own lips.

In the darkness, his hands gently cradled my face, searching, exploring, slowly tracing my eyebrows, my eyes, the bridge of my nose, my earlobes, and my lips. Then, he lightly lifted my chin, and time stood still.

I held my breath, staring into the impenetrable gray-black void before me, my body rigid and frozen. I could not see the expression on his face, nor could I guess the thoughts in his heart. I could only feel him drawing close to my ear, his warm breath spilling out in a slow cadence.

Limited though the light was, I could still sense hesitation and confusion in his somewhat unsteady breathing. Yet this bewilderment did not last long. A moment later, as if having made up his mind, he drew a deep breath, pressed his cheek silently against mine, and whispered with a choked murmur, "Those things were because..."

"Because... I wanted to see you."

With that, he stirred slightly, straightening his posture. His arms wrapped around my waist once more, pulling my body closer to his. By now, an extremely faint sliver of light had begun to seep in through the window. In the hazy illumination, his eyes seemed laden with tenderness, heartache, and a profound sense of cherishing, yet mingled with pain, inner conflict, and helplessness.

He looked at me, gazing at me with absolute devotion: "I don't know when it started, but deep down, I always longed to see you. Staring at your back during lectures was never enough; I wanted to be closer, to have more. My family forbade me from coming to the desert, and even I didn't know why I came. Perhaps it was simply to catch another glimpse of you—even if it was only just to look, that alone would be enough."

His voice came low and soft, weaving its way into my soul, almost melting my heart. In that watery, tender timbre, there lingered a wisp of low-spirited despair.

After a long silence, I suddenly raised my head, slowly turning his face toward me. I hooked my arms gently around his neck, applying a gradual pressure, and looked straight into his eyes, compelling him to lean in toward me.

At the very instant our lips were about to meet, Musa suddenly averted his face, pulled his hand away, and pushed aside the arms I had looped behind his neck.

The movement was fluid and accomplished in one unbroken, decisive motion. Before I even had time to feel a sense of loss, I felt myself being pulled into a forceful embrace. In a whirl of motion up and down, I found myself seated upon his lap.

This placement brought us precisely to eye level. He looked at me, his fingers lightly brushing across my cheek before his arm hooked around the back of my neck, locking me in a grip from which there was no escape.

"Your skin is so lovely..."

The desert country was dry and scorching; the people here surely rarely possessed skin as delicate and smooth as mine. He savored the texture of my face, inch by inch. Slowly, his face drew closer, coming ever nearer, until the tip of his nose brushed against mine.

He captured my lips.

The air seemed to heat up abruptly, and an invisible, ambiguous warmth instantly scorched the tips of my ears.

His kiss was soft, lingering, and intertwined between our lips and teeth. I was slightly dazed, my throat suddenly feeling parched.

The surroundings were abnormally still; this time, even the sound of the wind had vanished. I was completely enveloped by Musa. His hands cupped my face, locking me within the sanctuary of his broad chest. And those lips rested gently upon mine, sucking, tracing, with absolute devotion, with absolute reverence.

I slowly closed my eyes as well, my breathing shallow as I clung to him in a dizzying, endless entanglement.

My heart, my love—quietly surrendered to him entirely.
