Chapter 47: The Form of a Deity! The Calm Before the Bloody Storm!
Zhou Quan drove, carrying Li Muchi, and arrived near the location Zhai Qingwu had sent.
Surrounding them was a cluster of unfinished, abandoned buildings.
The developers had topped out the buildings, collected most of the pre-sale funds, and then bolted with the money, leaving behind this desolate expanse of ghost structures.
Not far away, fading red banners hung by homebuyers, now caked in a thick layer of dust.
"I've arrived," Zhou Quan messaged Zhai Qingwu.
Zhai Qingwu replied at lightning speed: "I'm on the abandoned building at your six o'clock. Look up and you'll see me."
Zhou Quan looked up and indeed saw Zhai Qingwu waving from the roof of one of the unfinished buildings.
"Coming," Zhou Quan replied.
He drove the car up to the base of the building and brought Li Muchi up the steps.
This was a low-rise style unfinished apartment building, standing only six stories tall in total. They quickly reached the roof.
Zhai Qingwu stood at the edge of the roof with her hands in her pockets, her silhouette slender and graceful.
"Why did you bring a child along?"
She turned around and sized up Li Muchi.
Zhou Quan gave a concise explanation: "He also has supernatural abilities. He can travel in and out of shadows."
"Travel in and out of shadows?" Zhai Qingwu looked curious.
Zhou Quan glanced at Li Muchi.
Understanding the cue, Li Muchi sank into the shadow and then popped back out.
"Such an impressive ability!" Zhai Qingwu's eyes lit up. "What is his transcendent medium?"
"Transcendent medium?" Zhou Quan frowned. "What is that?"
Zhai Qingwu paused for a moment, then asked incredulously, "You don't know what a transcendent medium is?"
Zhou Quan shook his head.
"Then how did you become a werewolf?" Zhai Qingwu stared at Zhou Quan, looking him up and down. "Were you born a werewolf?"
Zhou Quan was silent for two seconds before hesitatingly asking, "What does a transcendent medium specifically refer to?"
He had an inkling.
His [Old Covenant Werewolf Identity Card] might be a transcendent medium, but he wasn't sure if his guess was correct.
"A transcendent medium is an item that, once implanted into the human body, bestows supernatural powers."
Zhai Qingwu gave an example: "Take werewolf blood, for instance. If you inject anyone with a dose of werewolf blood, as long as they survive, they gain the ability to transform into a werewolf. The strength depends on the quality of the blood."
Zhou Quan nodded, a thoughtful look in his eyes.
It was pretty much what he had guessed; a transcendent medium was something that granted supernatural powers to ordinary people.
However, the [Old Covenant Werewolf Identity Card] did not need to be implanted into the body.
It should be considered... a transcendent prop?
Zhai Qingwu continued, "Werewolves are the descendants left behind by the Wolf God, a special race born in the previous supernatural cycle, but they have long since gone extinct. Today's werewolves are just ordinary people who have been injected with werewolf blood."
She stared at Zhou Quan's face and asked curiously, "You've never been injected with werewolf blood?"
"No," Zhou Quan paused. "But I have a different transcendent medium that allows me to transform into a werewolf."
Zhai Qingwu nodded, her gaze shifting back to Li Muchi. "Traveling in and out of shadows—just thinking about it is terrifying. Imagine having him carry a nuclear bomb to blow people up; every blast would wipe them out in absolute silence!"
She asked in a seductive tone, "Little kid, what is your transcendent medium?"
Facing Zhai Qingwu's inquiry, Li Muchi looked utterly blank.
"Did the old director give you any injections? How did your ability to travel through shadows come about?" Zhou Quan asked.
The ability to move through shadows was immensely powerful.
If it could be acquired through a transcendent medium, he wanted one too.
Li Muchi shook his head. He whispered, "Grandma said my ability was born with me."
"Born with it?" Zhai Qingwu's jaw dropped in shock.
She muttered in a daze, "A naturally born supernatural ability... that's a divine seed..."
"Yes, Grandma said I have a divine seed." Li Muchi wore a pained expression. "Grandma said she waited for more than twenty years just to find a good child like me."
He thought of that agonizing night, and his voice grew softer and softer.
Gulp!
Zhai Qingwu swallowed hard.
Zhou Quan asked doubtfully, "What is a divine seed? Is it very powerful?"
Zhai Qingwu stared straight at Li Muchi, her eyes burning with intensity. "A divine seed, as the name implies, is the qualification to become a god!"
The bearing of a deity? Zhou Quan felt a shock run through his heart.
"The power of a transcendent medium is rigid, and its room for growth is practically zero."
Zhai Qingwu's gaze remained glued to Li Muchi as she continued, "Naturally awakened supernatural abilities are different. Their room for growth is limitless. As long as they don't die, they can leap over the dragon's gate and become supreme gods high above."
Zhai Qingwu said with solemn gravity, "In other words, anyone capable of naturally awakening a supernatural ability is destined to become a god from birth!"
Zhou Quan looked at Li Muchi, a sudden sense of epiphany washing over him.
So that was it!
No wonder the Evil God wanted to massacre the orphanage—it turned out to be to prevent the old director from nurturing Li Muchi into a god!
The kind old director would surely raise a god who was equally kind, and that god would ultimately become an obstacle to the Evil God's destruction of the world.
That was why the Evil God struck first...
"With such a little treasure in your family, it's one thing not to hide him away, but you actually brought him to such a dangerous place?" Zhai Qingwu squatted down and scooped Li Muchi up into her arms.
Li Muchi instinctively wrapped his arms around Zhai Qingwu's neck, his eyes filled with bewilderment.
Zhou Quan stared at Li Muchi for a couple of seconds.
This child is different from me; he hasn't been shackled by the Evil God yet. I must ensure I guide his moral education properly so he doesn't stray onto a crooked path.
Zhou Quan looked at Zhai Qingwu. "Your ability is also quite impressive. What is your medium?"
"My medium..." Zhai Qingwu's eyes flickered.
"My medium is a strand of hair from the God of Curses. It's the only one left in the entire world, right on my person, and it cannot be recycled."
"Don't go getting any ideas about me."
Zhou Quan nodded.
He didn't have a transcendent medium yet, but if he got the chance, he would acquire one to fill the vacancy.
Thinking of the leader of the Ash Night Society and the man with the monkey's paw, Zhou Quan couldn't help feeling a tinge of regret.
Those two likely possessed transcendent mediums, but they had been disposed of far too thoroughly, leaving nothing behind to retrieve.
Suddenly, Zhai Qingwu raised her voice.
"Look!"
"The Divine Remains are right there!"
Zhou Quan snapped out of his thoughts, following Zhai Qingwu's gaze to see an elliptical "black bowl" turned upside down upon the earth.
"The Divine Remains are within that darkness."
"The scope of the darkness is shrinking. Once it completely vanishes, the Divine Remains will be visible."
Zhai Qingwu sighed with emotion. "Those without a divine seed have only one path to godhood, and that is to merge with the Divine Remains."
"Just wait and see, soon the ground will be littered with corpses."
As she spoke, Zhai Qingwu kept holding Li Muchi, seemingly unable to put the child down.
"Then aren't we being too conspicuous?" Zhou Quan frowned.
Anyone who had played gun games knew that standing high meant dying fast.
Zhai Qingwu remained unconcerned. "I've carved the Curse of the Lost Land at our feet; others can't see us."
Zhou Quan nodded. If that was the case, they could sit back and watch the tigers fight from the mountain.
Yet, another question struck him.
"Official people will come too, won't they? If they deploy the armed police and the military, will we still have a chance?"
Before his voice faded, a deafening roar echoed from not far away.
