Chapter 59: The God's Sadistic Sense of Humor! My Little Pony!
Zhou Quan fell into a brief silence.
Had they never fought side by side, he would have had nothing to hesitate over; family would undoubtedly matter more than outsiders.
Yet, Qin Xue and Fu Qingshan—one had died for him, and the other had indirectly died because of him.
Now that there was an opportunity to resurrect them, could he say no?
"The stances of these two differ from yours. If they die here, the Special Investigation Bureau's clues regarding you will be severed, allowing you to retreat behind the scenes and resume your former life."
"Therefore, wouldn't it be better simply not to save them?"
The Evil God’s voice was laced with profound temptation.
Zhou Quan frowned slightly.
Helping him save people while simultaneously urging him not to—what on earth was the Evil God playing at?
Hesitantly, he replied, "Although our stances differ, they are good people. They shouldn't have died for me."
"Ah, but what about your younger sister?" The Evil God leaned in. "If you miss this divine remains, who knows when you might obtain another one!"
"Are you certain she can afford to wait?"
"What if you fail to acquire any divine remains over the next few years, and your sister's condition worsens beyond recovery because of it?"
"Are you willing to gamble?"
The Evil God coaxed him with gentle persuasion.
Zhou Quan fell silent.
In that instant, it felt as though the Evil God had placed him upon a colossal scale.
Both sides of the balance bore his weight.
On one side lay his love for his sister; on the other, his compassion for Qin Xue and Fu Qingshan.
A flash of sudden realization dawned upon Zhou Quan.
This was the Evil God's game!
Adding weights to either side of the scale simply to savor his swaying and inner torment, deriving pleasure from the spectacle.
Zhou Quan took a deep breath.
He longed to cut through the complexity like a sharp blade, to dismiss all thought and blurt out an answer just to shatter the Evil God's composure!
Yet he could not do so, for this choice carried far too much weight for everyone involved.
"Yet if you choose not to save them for the sake of your sister, your conscience will surely torment you, won't it?"
"After all, they died on your account."
The Evil God patted Ulence’s shoulder and let out a long sigh. "Especially that young girl. Her abilities were unsuited for combat, yet to save you, she actually threw stones at Ulence. Such admirable courage!"
Zhou Quan clenched his fists.
To be honest, he could hardly recall Qin Xue's features, having never once looked at her closely from beginning to end.
Yet her actions had left an indelible, profound impression upon him.
She was an exceptionally good girl; she deserved better than death.
At that moment, the Evil God shifted his tone. "Your sister is truly adorable."
"Every time she falls asleep, she suffers from nightmares—a world of pitch darkness filled with terrifying sounds echoing from all directions."
The Evil God sighed wistfully. "Clearly frightened, she refuses to mention the dreams simply because she doesn't want her family to worry."
Zhou Quan's expression jolted.
"Is this true?" he asked in disbelief, unable to stop himself.
The Evil God nodded. "Of course it's true. Just go back and ask, and you'll find out."
Chaos reigned within Zhou Quan's mind.
Concealing the terror of her dreams simply to spare her family worry...
Changle had been sensible since childhood; such a thing was entirely within the realm of possibility!
A sharp ache pierced through Zhou Quan's heart.
What should he do?
How on earth was he supposed to choose?
Observing Zhou Quan's expression, a deeply satisfied smile spread across the Evil God's face.
"Time is running out."
"I'll give you five more seconds. If you fail to reach a decision, I'm leaving."
"Truth be told, even if those two died for you, how could their importance ever compare to that of your sister?"
"Your sister is of your own flesh and blood!"
Five!
Four!
Three!
Two!
One!
The five seconds vanished in a flash. The Evil God said with a smiling expression, "I'm off, then."
"Resurrect them!" Zhou Quan blurted out, his gaze fraught with intense complexity, for he had no idea whether he had made the right choice.
Yet Qin Xue and Fu Qingshan had already lost their lives once because of him; he could not bring himself to let them lose their lives a second time.
Gritting his teeth, Zhou Quan muttered, "Even if I miss this divine remains, there will be other chances to obtain one, but there is only one opportunity for resurrection. Miss it, and it's gone forever!"
As the world entered the transcendent cycle, more divine remains were bound to fall from the skies.
Every time he helped the Evil God kill someone, he gained a powerful innate talent. Forsaking this particular set of divine remains simply meant he would have to secure another when the opportunity arose.
Resurrection was entirely different.
If he let this pass, he had no clue where he could possibly find another deity capable of reviving Qin Xue and Fu Qingshan.
With vested interest, the Evil God inquired, "Are you certain? Resurrecting them brings you no benefits whatsoever, and it may very well land you in a mountain of trouble!"
"...I am certain." Zhou Quan forced the three words out as though every ounce of strength had been drained from his body.
I'm sorry, Changle.
Your brother swears that the next time a divine remains becomes available, he will tear heaven and earth apart to get it for you...
"Hahahaha!" Watching Zhou Quan's agonizing expression, the Evil God slapped his own thigh and roared with laughter.
"Watching someone like you make a choice is truly fascinating!"
"I was just toying with you!"
Toying with me? Zhou Quan froze.
"Resurrecting two people is merely a trivial matter. Keep the divine remains for yourself."
The Evil God stood up from Ulence's shoulder and stretched lazily.
His form dissolved into billowing streams of black fog, hurtling respectively toward Qin Xue and Fu Qingshan.
"Thank you for the magnificent performance. As your reward, I shall resurrect them and erase their memories of you."
"Do keep up the good work!"
Only then did Zhou Quan snap back to reality.
To the Evil God, this truly was nothing more than a game. Whether to grant resurrection or not rested entirely on a whim!
The Evil God had simply been using him for amusement.
It crossed Zhou Quan's mind: had he chosen not to save them and opted for the divine remains instead, what would the Evil God have done?
"If I had chosen not to resurrect them, would you really have just left?"
Unable to hold back, Zhou Quan asked, "And before leaving, would you have told me that you actually could have resurrected them, but chose not to simply because I didn't pick that option?"
A light chuckle escaped the Evil God. "Once a game is over, the correct answer must always be revealed, mustn't it?"
Hearing this reply, a surge of overwhelming negativity erupted within Zhou Quan.
Fixating his gaze upon the disintegrating form of the Evil God, his lips moved in silent articulation.
*First Light of Dawn!*
[You have cursed the deity that shelters you, biting the hand that feeds. Truly commendable.]
[Reward granted: One "My Little Pony".]
Rewards for this too? Zhou Quan was stunned.
A few lines of delicate text surfaced across his retina, every single character exuding a fairy-tale charm.
[My Little Pony]
[Let the rainbow enter dreams, transforming into my loyal steed; galloping across heaven and earth, sheltering my peace.]
...
Howling gales swept across the land, churning amidst roaring thunder. Deep within the darkness, an ineffable, colossal entity shifted sluggishly.
An ancient, gigantic bronze sword stood planted aslant in the earth, its hilt piercing deep into the clouds.
Harsh, piercing shrieks echoed ceaselessly, occasionally interspersed with agonizing screams and the hair-raising sound of mastication.
A young girl sat curled up on the ground, her arms wrapped around her knees, her eyes brimming with terror.
Suddenly, a breathtaking rainbow spanned the firmament, descending right before her.
The brilliant multicolored radiance dispelled the surrounding darkness, and the terrifying screeches vanished without a trace, leaving the young girl wrapped in a long-absent sense of safety.
Involuntarily, she reached out a hand.
The moment her fingertips brushed against the rainbow, the radiant light contracted inward, transforming into a gorgeous little rainbow pony.
The pony possessed a lush, multicolored mane, soft and fluffy, looking precisely like a vibrant cloud drifting low to the ground, entirely out of place in the grim surroundings.
It trotted in a joyous circle around the young girl before pressing its head against her palm, rubbing affectionately.
Feeling the marshmallow-soft texture against her palm, the little girl blinked in surprise as a look of bliss washed over her face.
"It smells like big brother..."
