Chapter 9: The First Drop of Blood! The Wolf King's Gratitude!
The Grey Night Society dares to blackmail me because they possess supernatural power. But what if I hold a supernatural power far greater than theirs?
Zhou Quan took out his Werewolf Identity Card.
He pinched the bottom right corner of the card between his thumb and forefinger and whispered in his heart: "Enhance Werewolf Identity Card. I want greater power."
*Whoosh—*
An invisible force pressed down upon the card.
The card shattered instantly, collapsing into a state of disintegration. The countless fibers that formed its body unraveled, much like a tangled ball of yarn.
Immediately after, these fibers condensed inward, reshaping themselves into the form of a card.
The pattern on the card had changed.
A vivid, crimson hue had emerged within the black vortex on the back, adding a touch of sinister mystery to its enigmatic appearance. The grey werewolf on the front was now powerfully muscled, its gaze arrogant and condescending, and a crown woven of black thorns rested upon its head, looking awe-inspiring and majestic.
【Wolf King Identity Card】
【You are the King of Werewolves, hidden among the masses. Every full moon, you may transform into the Wolf King. At the moment of transformation, you may teleport to any location within a ten-meter radius and perform a brutal rending attack on any target.】
【You may also destroy this identity card to initiate a three-minute transformation at any time (Wolf King's Exposure: please decide whom you wish to take with you).】
The Wolf King Identity Card!
Zhou Quan’s heart quickened.
Werewolves were a form of supernatural power, and the king among them was surely far stronger than an ordinary werewolf.
Tomorrow night happened to be the night of the full moon.
Although he did not know the true depth of the Grey Night Society’s leader, by acting with intent against the unprepared, he might well stand a chance against him.
Could the Wolf King Identity Card be enhanced further?
He shifted his thoughts.
A second later, two lines of small text appeared before his eyes.
【Enhancement Failed】
【Enhancement Requirement: 2 Achievement Points】
It failed, but Zhou Quan pursed his lips; he was not particularly surprised.
Achievement Points were, in essence, the power of an Evil God. If the Evil God could enhance items without limit, it could simply find a bomb to destroy the world instead of asking for his help.
Zhou Quan stared at the Wolf King on the card.
Out of Achievement Points?
That was easy to solve.
He just needed to complete another simulation.
Opening the notebook, he didn't need to do anything; he simply watched the text scroll across the pages, and he would gain Achievement Points.
Perhaps he might even gain a new talent.
With new Achievement Points and talents, facing the leader of the Grey Night Society tomorrow night would be a guaranteed victory.
After all, he was a vassal of the Evil God, tasked with helping the deity destroy the world. As long as he was willing to work, the Evil God would not treat him poorly.
The supernatural power the Evil God bestowed upon him was undoubtedly stronger than whatever source the Grey Night Society had scavenged from.
Zhou Quan took out the Evil God's notebook.
【Simulation Successful: The Hypocritical Orphanage Director】
【Begin next simulation?】
He looked at the cold text, remained silent for a long moment, and finally closed the notebook.
***
The next day, evening.
Moonlight leaked through the treetops, casting blurred patches of light by the pond. A night breeze swept across the tranquil water, stirring up ripples.
The massive villa was silent.
Zhou Quan sat alone on the sofa in the living room, staring ahead, expressionless.
He had given his servants the day off and had brought his parents home from the hospital; tonight, his family of four was all here.
Waiting for a distinguished guest.
*Rustle, rustle.* Footsteps echoed in the courtyard.
A man in white clothes and white shoes walked into the villa. He sat down opposite Zhou Quan, looking at him with a smiling face.
"Young Master, your home is truly quiet."
The moment the man spoke, Zhou Quan recognized his voice.
Zhou Quan studied the man's appearance.
Ordinary, completely unremarkable. If you threw this person into a crowd, a single blink would be enough to lose sight of him. In a sense, that was a trait in itself.
"Where is the money I asked for?" The leader’s lips curled upward, but his smile didn't reach his eyes; he looked quite hypocritical.
Zhou Quan pulled a scroll from under the table and shook it at the leader. "Stop talking about money. This is what you really want, isn't it?"
Although it was a question, his tone was certain.
The smile on the leader's face vanished.
He stared fixedly at the scroll in Zhou Quan's hand and spoke slowly: "You are smarter than I imagined, but for an ordinary person, being too smart is not necessarily a good thing."
The atmosphere grew heavy.
"What is this?" Zhou Quan asked bluntly.
"You've already seen it, haven't you? It's a map." The leader picked up the kettle on the table and poured himself a cup of hot water. He lifted the cup and took a sip.
"A map of what place?" Zhou Quan pressed.
The leader shrugged. "A place where a god is buried."
Zhou Quan was stunned.
Watching Zhou Quan's expression, the leader smiled. "Gods occasionally fall from the heavens. Some die on the spot, while others hide themselves before they perish."
"Find the remains of a god, and you can inherit the power of a god."
"President Zhou likely entrusted people everywhere to search for clues about divine remains in order to cure his daughter's illness."
He raised his cup and took another sip. The water in the cup was nearly gone.
"I actually knew about this from the very beginning, but I didn't pay it any mind." The leader pursed his lips, a look of surprise appearing on his face. "It wasn't until he was struck by a curse that I realized a blind cat had actually caught a dead mouse—he had truly found clues regarding the divine remains."
"So that's how it is." Zhou Quan nodded, a thoughtful look on his face.
The leader set down his cup and smiled. "I've had a cup of your water and chatted with you for quite a while; that's about enough."
"You are so smart."
"You should understand that I cannot let you live, right?"
A chill emerged in the leader’s eyes.
"I have one more question." Zhou Quan remained calm, as if he hadn't noticed the crisis he was facing at all.
***
The leader raised an eyebrow. "What question?"
"Why give me three days?" Zhou Quan asked with a calm expression. "Wouldn't it have been faster to kidnap me the day you showed up to get what you wanted?"
The leader chuckled. "You want to ask if the authorities have a department to suppress supernatural powers, right?"
"They do."
"The reason I set the meeting for today is that something major is happening today, and the authorities are too occupied to deal with me."
"And it will likely be difficult for them in the future, too."
The leader looked moved. "The world is changing. The era of the transcendent is about to descend."
"The era of the transcendent is about to descend?" Zhou Quan whispered.
The leader did not answer.
He rose slowly, and a short blade slid from his sleeve.
"Goodbye!"
He gripped the hilt, a sinister, mocking smile on his face, and threw the short blade.
*Whoosh!*
The blade traced a blinding silver arc, nailing itself into the expensive Italian sofa, burying itself to the hilt!
The leader froze.
Zhou Quan, who had been sitting there just a moment ago, was gone.
"Goodbye."
A familiar voice came from behind him. He widened his eyes in shock.
An unprecedented pain ripped through his chest.
He looked down in disbelief to see ten thick, long, grey steel talons. They were of varying sizes, with winding patterns upon them, and his blood was dripping down those very lines.
These are... fingernails?
The leader's mind went blank.
Blood choked his windpipe, and intense pain assaulted his nerves. He looked at the inhuman claws protruding from his chest, his heart filled with despair and regret.
*I was careless!*
*He is no ordinary person!*
*Damn it!*
He opened his mouth, but could only emit an unintelligible, bubbling sound: "Gurgle... gurgle..."
His life force dripped away with the blood, and despair expanded wildly in the silence.
"Thank you for telling me so much."
As the words fell, a massive force pulled in opposite directions. Muscles and bones were fragile, easily torn apart like a rotten hemp rope.
In the slanting moonlight, a majestic giant wolf over two meters tall stood proudly in the pool of blood.
He shook his claws, which were larger than watermelons, and warm blood splattered onto the pristine carpet, leaving behind striking, crimson streaks.
Zhou Quan raised his head.
The crown woven of black thorns shimmered with a dim luster, and moonlight flowed along his dense fur, dripping into the blood pool beneath his feet.
