Chapter 16: The Feng Family's Bloody Calamity

When something happened at Director Feng’s home, Lin Yulang was absolutely delighted.
This fellow, reveling in others' misfortune, took the opportunity to kick Feng when he was down, saying, “Director Feng, I’m telling you, my brother Lin Mazi is nothing but a charlatan roaming the underworld! Ever since he was six years old and was kidnapped by beggars, he hasn’t studied a single proper day of feng shui in these twenty years. What does he know about feng shui? He’s more suited to begging than anything else!”
“I am the rightful heir to the Lin family’s authentic feng shui tradition. Only the layouts I design can truly ensure the peace and safety of your home. You refused to listen to good advice and chose to be fooled by Lin Mazi, that trickster, ruining a perfectly good layout. Now see, you’re reaping the consequences!”
At this moment, Director Feng was filled with regret, stamping his feet and saying, “Alas! I never expected that dismantling the ‘Hundred Rivers Flowing into the Sea’ pattern on Mazi’s advice would bring such a bloody calamity!”
I quickly shook my head and said, “No, Director Feng, when exactly did you dismantle the ‘Hundred Rivers Flowing into the Sea’ layout?”
Without hesitation, Director Feng replied, “Just yesterday, why do you ask?”
Lin Yulang sneered, fanning the flames, “Director Feng dismantled the ‘Hundred Rivers Flowing into the Sea’ layout on your word, and your precious grandson immediately suffered a bloody disaster. Lin Mazi, this is all your doing!”
I spoke gravely, “Lin Yulang, for someone who prides himself on being the legitimate successor of feng shui, you lack even the simplest knowledge. The influence of a feng shui layout on one’s fortune is gradual. There’s no logic in a layout change taking effect instantaneously.”
“Director Feng only dismantled the ‘Hundred Rivers Flowing into the Sea’ layout during the day, and by night, his grandson encountered a bloody calamity. Feng shui’s effects cannot manifest so quickly.”
Lin Yulang was left speechless, unable to find a retort, and could only stammer helplessly.
“This…”
Hearing my explanation, Director Feng calmed down somewhat.
I took the chance to ask, “Director Feng, what exactly happened to your grandson last night? Can you tell me in detail?”
Director Feng’s face turned pale as he said, “My beloved grandson was playing in the yard last night, and suddenly a scream rang out. Then he disappeared without a trace…”
“Our whole family was terrified and searched everywhere all night but found no sign of him!”
“Until this morning, Lin Yulang suddenly appeared and was the one who brought my grandson back. When my grandson returned, he was covered in blood, with several wounds on his body and frightening bloody handprints on his back…”

“We… we don’t know what actually happened!”
Seeing that Director Feng himself was unclear about the details, I turned to his grandson and asked, “Little one, don’t be afraid. Tell me, where were you last night? Who took you away?”
But Feng’s grandson was clearly too terrified, his whole demeanor vacant and spiritless, his eyes devoid of life.
No matter how I tried to engage him, he ignored me.
Just as I was about to ask again, his mother, Zhang Jinyu, rushed over defensively, snapping irritably, “Enough with the questions! Don’t you see how scared my son is? Why would you want to upset him more? What if you leave him with psychological scars?”
“Damn Lin Mazi! I blame everything on you! If you hadn’t insisted that the old master dismantle the ‘Hundred Rivers Flowing into the Sea’ layout, my son wouldn’t have suffered this bloody disaster!”
“Just you wait. This isn’t over between us! I’ll make you and your Gu family, especially Gu Beitang, pay dearly—even if it bankrupts you!”
Before she finished, Lin Yulang jumped in, smirking coldly, “Exactly, this is all Lin Mazi’s fault! It can’t just be brushed aside!”
He went on, “As for what really happened, you don’t need to ask the boy. I’ll tell you!”
“Because you dismantled my feng shui layout without permission, disturbing the balance of yin and yang and the five elements of the Feng family, you invited unclean spirits! These spirits abducted Director Feng’s grandson and almost cost him his life. It just so happened that I was out jogging this morning and stumbled upon him, rescuing the boy in the nick of time.”
Having said this, Lin Yulang arrogantly lifted his chin, striking the pose of a savior.
Zhang Jinyu immediately expressed her gratitude, “Thanks to Master Lin Yulang, my son’s fate was spared! Rest assured, the Feng family values clear distinctions between grievances and debts. This lifesaving kindness will be deeply repaid!”
Director Feng added, “Yulang, I was blind before and wrongly blamed you. It seems you truly have talent! From now on, our family business will continue to work with your Cuilin Pavilion. Our family fortune depends on your blessings.”
However, while Lin Yulang’s words deceived others, they did not fool me.
His story contained obvious logical flaws.
Generally speaking, unclean spirits lurk in the shadows at night and do not show themselves during the day.
Yet Lin Yulang claimed he was jogging this morning when he rescued Director Feng’s grandson from the hands of the unclean spirit.
Just how formidable is this spirit to dare appear openly in broad daylight?

I snorted coldly and immediately pressed further.
“Oh? Lin Yulang, then I have to ask, what kind of unclean spirit exactly abducted Director Feng’s grandson? Is it an ancient corpse? Or a resentful ghost?”
Lin Yulang didn’t expect such a detailed question and was at a loss for words, his eyes darting nervously.
Since Director Feng’s grandson was already too frightened to speak the truth, and Lin Yulang was the only witness, whatever he said would be taken as fact.
Clearing his throat, he stammered, “The unclean spirit is an old… cough cough… old ghost! An ancient ghost! It’s quite ferocious. I struggled with it for a long time and fought fiercely for three hundred rounds before finally rescuing the director’s grandson!”
Upon hearing this, Director Feng and his daughter-in-law quickly expressed their thanks again.
“Thank you, Master Lin!”
“Master Lin, you’ve worked hard!”
I sneered, “Lin Yulang, so you mean to say that an ancient ghost fought you for three hundred rounds early in the morning under the bright sunlight? That ghost must be quite extraordinary to not fear the sun and dare to show itself so openly in broad daylight.”
As soon as I said this, Lin Yulang’s face flushed crimson.
“Lin Mazi, what the hell do you mean by that?” he shouted angrily.
“Do you think I’m lying? Don’t forget, I was the one who brought back the director’s grandson! On what grounds do you accuse me of deception? What I said is the truth!”
I smiled faintly and spread my hands.
“Whether what you say is true or not isn’t up to me or you. It depends on the director’s grandson himself speaking out.”
Lin Yulang sneered, “Heh, Lin Mazi, you’re really devious. You know the director’s grandson is so scared he can’t say a word to back me up, so you have the audacity to slander me openly, right?”
Calmly, I said, “What if I told you I can make the director’s grandson speak?”
