Volume One, Chapter 33: The Consequence of Failed Pretension
Under Gao Jianguo's lead, Xiao Fei brought a few of his men to the private room where Chu Ming and the others were gathered.
Xiao Fei swept his gaze coldly over everyone, demanding in a frosty tone, "Who started the fight just now?"
Faced with this unexpected delight, Zuo Jun wanted nothing more than to laugh aloud; with a leap, he dove headfirst into that swirling vortex.
Lu Chen did not pursue; he simply stood quietly where he was, his ancient sword's tip flickering like the tongue of a green serpent.
Wang Zuobian nodded in understanding and led his horse forward. He, too, had just heard the bald bandit leader claim to be from the Marinated Egg Bandit Gang—a name entirely unfamiliar to him. Could this be a new group of mountain bandits?
Since Zi Mo had already revealed their intentions, each took someone and hurried down a passage.
However, there was no need to offend Liu Hongji. First, he was on a mission. Second, Liu Hongji was a prominent minister of the Great Chu Dynasty, commanding vast armies. The foremost rule of the Nether Sect was to avoid meddling in the affairs of the mortal world; to provoke Liu Hongji would be indefensible before the sect.
"Could it be the Whip Talent? Able to sever all things in existence with a single lash, even mundane emotions and ties..." Yang Dairuo joined the discussion.
Zuo Jun didn't have long to savor his triumph. With a mocking smile, he pointed abruptly, sending a surge of spiritual power shooting forth. Gu Li, suspended in midair, stiffened and then fell.
Ye Meier had been here many times before. After all, she brought her team every year to the Stone Gambling Festival. This year was meant to be no different, but a series of events had changed her mind entirely.
But without true inner power, how could a hundred scattered soldiers possibly break through seven hundred regular shield, blade, spear, and archer troops?
Feng Yuechen glanced at Chu Feng and burst into laughter. The two played off one another perfectly—it was clear Chu Feng had helped clean up the mess.
He swam toward the shore, and as soon as his head broke the surface, he saw a crowd of Dao Yuan class geniuses waiting. Two of them were already stripping off their shirts, ready to jump into the river.
At that moment, Lu Shu's heart tensed. He was well aware that these slave owners—and those behind them—were no fools. If they didn't intend to die here, they must have something else up their sleeves.
Of course, his cheerfulness was not without cause. He hadn't even cultivated; he wandered aimlessly, then went home to lounge with his sisters. Such a monotonous and dull life was, for him and his sisters, a rare respite.
Cong Jiaxin listened, unsurprised by what he heard. After all, Huifang would be pregnant at this time, and the child would surely be Chen Heng's. Yet, they were already engaged in a broken engagement; now, with a pregnancy after the fact, what could be done?
The entire place had fallen into chaos, mainly because the soldiers were terrified of the plague. None truly wanted to fight. Only those in power could afford medicine; if ordinary soldiers fell ill, it meant certain death—and perhaps even being imprisoned here.
She sent everyone back and sat down on a stone step along the main road. Taking out her phone, Xichen powered it on and dialed Zheng Chenheng's number.
The prince's heir of Liao was deeply troubled. He had just returned from his father, the Prince of Liao, and had not slept all night. The prince had caused a fuss throughout the night; several sons went to attend him, yet he insisted on seeing the illegitimate child he had never met, ordering them to find him.
Unfortunately, Ning Xiu was preoccupied, and all these gestures of goodwill failed to catch his attention.
After finishing his breakfast, Karl turned to leave but was suddenly called back by Uncle John.
His master had been defeated. As the disciple, how could he stand by and do nothing? Today, at last, he stood face-to-face with the Azure Emperor and poured out everything he had longed to say.
