Chapter 102: Scared Out of One's Wits
Captain Zhang immediately perked up upon hearing this and smiled warmly at Qin Lan.
“Don’t worry. People like that deserve severe punishment. I’ll call a friend from the criminal investigation unit to file a case. With you as a witness, I guarantee they’ll put him in his place properly.”
Qin Lan smiled and said, “I’m just afraid you won’t be able to handle him.”
Captain Zhang’s eyes widened as he replied, “Even if he has connections, the law is equal for everyone.”
Watching Captain Zhang speak with such righteousness, Qin Lan stifled a laugh and said, “I’m rooting for you, but first, you have to get through this challenge.”
“What challenge?” Captain Zhang asked, puzzled.
Qin Lan covered her mouth to laugh and said, “You’ll find out soon enough.”
At that moment, Yu Bai and Sheng Siyu had already gotten out of the car, and even the junior traffic officer couldn’t stop them.
They hurried over to the police car and saw Lu Ming and an unfamiliar man both handcuffed, their faces instantly filled with shock.
“Mr. Lu, what should we do?” Yu Bai asked anxiously.
Lu Ming smiled calmly. “Don’t worry. I want to see how this ends.”
Seeing Lu Ming so composed, Yu Bai and Sheng Siyu recalled that he was no ordinary man. Considering his influence at the Five Phoenix Pavilion, this little issue should be manageable.
With that thought, they relaxed and began to scrutinize the man and woman who had arrived.
Meanwhile, Yun Ketian glared angrily at Captain Zhang, who looked at Qin Lan with a lecherous gaze, biting his teeth and cursing Zhang’s entire lineage under his breath.
Just then, a business police vehicle roared up and stopped beside the group. A dozen or so officers in supervisory uniforms got out, surrounding Captain Zhang and the others along with the police car.
Following closely behind was a black Audi A8, from which a man in his fifties and a young man in his twenties stepped out.
This was none other than Liu Mingtian, the head of the Traffic Department, and his secretary.
Captain Zhang Yulin was stunned at first but quickly sensed trouble.
When he recognized Liu Mingtian among the arrivals, he was completely dumbfounded.
As a traffic officer, he naturally knew the head of the Traffic Department.
But why would Director Liu come here? Surely not just for these few people?
The thought made Zhang Yulin’s legs go weak, and waves of helplessness washed over him.
Liu Mingtian approached the police car and, seeing Yun Ketian handcuffed to the door, was filled with rage.
His subordinates had dared to handcuff Yun Ketian — what foolishness! If Yun Shengguo took offense, could Liu Mingtian handle the fallout?
At that moment, Zhang Yulin hurried over, fawning as he said, “Director Liu, what brings you here?”
Without a word, Liu Mingtian raised his hand and slapped Zhang Yulin sharply.
The crisp slap echoed, followed by Liu’s gritted-teeth demand: “Release them immediately.”
That slap jolted Zhang Yulin fully awake—he knew for certain Liu had come because of this matter.
The realization that these people wielded such power that Liu Mingtian himself had come left Zhang Yulin trembling all over.
“This is over. Completely over.”
Regret overwhelmed him. He had never imagined someone driving such a beat-up car could command such influence.
Now that Liu Mingtian was involved, Zhang Yulin no longer fantasized about escaping. All he could think about was how to avoid being dismissed or imprisoned.
No matter how hard he thought, no good solution came to mind.
Frantically, he fumbled with the keys, hands shaking as he prepared to unlock the handcuffs on Yun Ketian and Lu Ming.
But his nervousness caused him to drop the keys several times.
The two junior traffic officers stood pale and stiff nearby, one so frightened he had wet himself.
Finally steadying himself, Zhang Yulin tried to unlock Yun Ketian’s cuffs, but Yun Ketian shoved him away coldly.
“I’m accused of obstructing official duty and threatening police personnel. These charges haven’t been cleared yet. You can’t just unlock the handcuffs.”
Zhang Yulin broke out in a cold sweat, while Liu Mingtian’s fury seemed to ignite from every pore.
That fool had even pinned those two charges on Yun Ketian—he was asking for death.
Seeing Yun Ketian’s expression, Liu Mingtian knew he wasn’t about to let this slide. His face darkened.
“What’s really going on? Why are they handcuffed?”
Under Liu Mingtian’s harsh interrogation, Zhang Yulin’s legs trembled, barely able to stand.
He stammered, “It’s a misunderstanding, Director Liu. Please hear me out.”
“I suggest you tell the truth. It might save you yet. Otherwise, no one can protect you,” Liu Mingtian said coldly.
Hearing this, Zhang Yulin realized there was no hiding it. These people’s identities were definitely extraordinary. He could talk to Liu Mingtian directly, and Liu already knew what had happened.
Given the circumstances, arguing was pointless. Confessing honestly might just spare him.
If he tried to play tricks, Liu Mingtian would have no trouble dealing with him.
So, Zhang Yulin steeled himself and recounted in detail how he had stopped Lu Ming, extorted twenty thousand yuan under the pretense of drunk driving, then found two girls and falsely accused them of prostitution, and finally how he had quarreled with Yun Ketian and handcuffed him.
Liu Mingtian listened, furious beyond measure. This scoundrel’s audacity was staggering—he wished he could kill him on the spot.
After calming himself, Liu Mingtian said, “Good, you at least have some responsibility. You act boldly. Now, immediately apologize to those involved and seek their forgiveness. Otherwise, prepare to rot in prison.”
Liu Mingtian knew the root of the matter was still with Yun Ketian. If Yun didn’t forgive, it wouldn’t be over.
At that, Zhang Yulin slapped his own face repeatedly in front of Yun Ketian, hitting himself so hard his nose bled.
Tears streaming, he cried, “Sir, I was blind. It was my fault. I shouldn’t have abused my power. Please forgive me.”
Seeing Zhang Yulin’s pathetic display, Yun Ketian suddenly lost any desire to waste time with such a petty man.
“Apologize to Brother Lu,” he said.
Zhang Yulin was startled, remembering the other person handcuffed inside the car.
He hurriedly opened the rear door and said to Lu Ming, “Mr. Lu, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have extorted you. I was blind. You can punish me as you wish. Please forgive me.”
While speaking, Zhang Yulin slapped his own face fiercely again until stars danced before his eyes.
Lu Ming sneered coldly, flexed his arm, and the handcuffs shattered into pieces inside the car.
He then pushed open the door and stepped down from the police vehicle.
Zhang Yulin gaped in shock, unable to close his mouth for a long time, looking utterly stunned.
Lu Ming walked over to Zhang Yulin and said slowly, “You brought this on yourself. If you hadn’t been so greedy, would you be facing this fate?”
Zhang Yulin stared blankly at Lu Ming, unable to speak.
Lu Ming then said to Yun Ketian, “Let’s go. I’m too tired to argue with him.”
Yun Ketian nodded.
Nearby, Liu Mingtian, still shocked, exclaimed loudly at Zhang Yulin, “You fool, why haven’t you unlocked Mr. Yun’s handcuffs yet?”
Startled by Liu’s shout, Zhang Yulin snapped out of it and hurried to unlock Yun Ketian’s cuffs.
Then he said, “Mr. Yun, I’m sor—Mr. Yun?”
Halfway through, he seemed to realize something and looked at Yun Ketian in horror.
The top leader of the northwest region was also surnamed Yun. Could this Mr. Yun be the same?
Dizziness overwhelmed Zhang Yulin.
Who else but the northwest’s top leader could merit such a visit from the head of the Traffic Department and be addressed as “Mr. Yun” by Liu Mingtian?
Zhang Yulin knew he was utterly finished.
At first, he still harbored some hope that by confessing honestly, he might only be dismissed. After all, he had made a lot of money over the years and could find something else to do.
But if this was that Mr. Yun, it was a whole different matter.
One word from him could ruin Zhang Yulin completely.
“Mr. Yun, I was truly blind as a bat. Please overlook my faults and spare me this once,” he pleaded.
