A few thoughts, which I would like to share with everyone.
Yesterday morning, I went to the hospital to visit a childhood friend who is now in the late stages of liver cancer, at only thirty-nine years old.
Just over ten days ago, he came to my house and told me he had been feeling dizzy lately and wanted to get checked at the hospital. A few days later, he said he had a bit of cirrhosis and was admitted to our county hospital. I went to see him, offered some comfort, and a week later, he was discharged and returned home. I visited him at his house and chatted for a while.
I never imagined that only a few days later, he would be hospitalized again—this time in the city's major hospital. At that moment, I knew things had taken a turn for the worse.
Together with two other childhood friends, I went to the city to see him. In just over ten days, he had wasted away to the point of being unrecognizable, his abdomen swollen with ascites.
The doctors and his family were hiding the truth from him, telling him it was only mild cirrhosis and that he would recover. We didn't dare mention his real condition, and could only make small talk about other things.
By the time we returned home, it was already four in the afternoon.
My mood was unsettled for a long time. Life truly is unpredictable—one never knows whether tomorrow or misfortune will arrive first.
This year, I lost my mother, and now I am forced to watch another childhood friend, so young, slipping away before my eyes, powerless to do anything. I feel deeply how difficult and helpless life can be.
From four in the afternoon until past midnight, my mind was in turmoil and I managed to write only six thousand words. Today, there will only be two chapters, and I hope everyone will understand.
Sincerely, I wish all of you good health and happiness in everything.
