“That file is a bit too large… Yesterday, it took two computers running simultaneously to handle it. I’m worried that if we connect it to these old machines, they’ll just crash,” Cheng Li explained as she pulled out a hard drive.

Lin Lu-yo glanced at the setup, then at her own computer, unable to suppress her concern for its limited memory. “Maybe it’s best to forget it… but thank you anyway.”

She had already experienced the agony of a half-hour reboot after a system crash once before—there was no need to repeat that ordeal. The thought of climbing up to the eighteenth floor to beg the IT department for help over such a minor issue was not appealing.

“You’re all here early!” Chen Xu-jia strolled over, helmet dangling from one hand and breakfast in the other.

“Did you cycle to work again today?”

“Yeah! My place isn’t far, so I treat it as exercise,” she replied. Outside of work, Chen Xu-jia had two main hobbies: doting on her cat and working out. Lately, work had been piling up—she could still find time to play with her cat now and then, but working out had become a luxury. So she set her sights on her commute, cycling to combine transit with fitness.

As they spoke, Chen Xu-jia quickly tucked her helmet into her locker, then pulled out a skirt and slipped it on over her leggings. The practiced ease with which she moved made it clear this was far from her first time.

“Hey, Cheng Li!” After changing, Chen Xu-jia scanned the room before settling her gaze on Cheng Li. “We’re meeting with the Data Analysis Department soon. Bring your laptop and come with us.”

“Umm… Lu-yo, you can stay at your desk for now and read through the posts on our intranet.” Fearing Lin Lu-yo might feel left out, Chen Xu-jia added, “You majored in something other than operations, after all. The intranet content will help you get up to speed for your future work.”

“Alright!” Cheng Li’s face lit up with delight at being entrusted with such an important task, one clearly more significant than Lin Lu-yo’s current assignment. Next to her, Lin Lu-yo nodded obediently, showing her understanding.

Having assigned tasks to the two newcomers, Chen Xu-jia turned to the rest of the team, the “veterans,” to lay out their responsibilities. In less than three minutes, everyone had a clear sense of what was expected of them for the day.

A sense of urgency, like hearing the trumpet that signals a call to arms, washed over Lin Lu-yo. She had never felt this way during the previous days, when she was simply checking off items on a category list. Now, she was charged with an electric excitement.

She hurried back to her seat, logged into the intranet, and began browsing the posts.

Perhaps she had felt a trace of envy when Chen Xu-jia first assigned the tasks, but reading through the trove of resources her predecessors had compiled, that envy transformed into a thirst for new knowledge.

The range of information was astounding! It might not quite reach the level of “soaring through the heavens and plucking turtles from the five oceans,” but everything from algorithms, programming, marketing, operations, copywriting, to product identification—every skill required for e-commerce—was there.

At half past nine, the workday officially began. Chen Xu-jia set down her water bottle, glanced around, and announced, “Alright, everyone, bring your laptops and let’s head to Meeting Room 0709! Tan Fang, go and call our colleagues from Data Analysis downstairs. Make sure both Cheng Yu and Ding Tong-yu come this time! Last time Old Ding tried to skip out, and we had to repeat everything for him later—a real hassle.”
