Chapter 91: The Company’s Grand Gesture
Friday arrived in the blink of an eye.
That morning, after Lin Luyao got off the bus and entered the park, she saw that many of the billboards had been taken over by Masse’s promotional slogans. Even the advertising spaces beneath the streetlights were no exception.
It was almost absurd.
Lin Luyao clicked her tongue in astonishment. Right then, all she wanted was to hide the employee badge on her chest. After all, this show of force from her company was exactly the sort of thing nouveau riche people would do.
That was what she thought, and what she did. She stuffed the badge inside the collar of her hoodie.
What she did not expect was that the company’s true display of excess was still to come. When she reached the entrance, she saw a red carpet laid all the way into the lobby, with bouquets and balloons tied on both sides. The spectacle was so overblown that Lin Luyao almost mistook it for someone’s wedding scene.

She stood at the door and snapped several photos, sending them into the small group chat for their merchandise operations team, her face full of amazement.
[Lin Luyao: What on earth is going on with our company today? What kind of stunt is this?]
[He Suzhen: No way, did the company really go all in this year?]
[Yang Tianqi: This is quite a setup]
[Tang Xiao: Maybe our boss won the lottery jackpot?]
Not only had Lin Luyao never seen anything like it, even Chen Xujia, Tang Xiao, and the others who had been with the company for two or three years had never witnessed such a thing.
[Wang Shi: Making a fuss over nothing]
[Wang Shi: Wait until the eleventh day of the eleventh month. That’s when the real show begins]
Just as the girls were chattering away and flooding the chat, Wang Shi, who had been lurking silently, suddenly sent those two lines.
When Lin Luyao suddenly saw Wang Shi’s profile picture, she froze.
Wasn’t this supposed to be the girls’ gossip group? Why was their manager in it too?
As she spiraled into self-doubt, she glanced at the group name again. Ah. She had sent it to the wrong group.
[Wang Shi: Don’t post anything unrelated to work in the work chat from now on.]
Wang Shi sent another message.
Lin Luyao covered her face with a wry smile, thinking she had truly embarrassed herself this time. Fortunately, she had sent it to the merchandise operations group; if she had accidentally posted it in the main operations department chat, that would have been a real social death.
After Lin Luyao arrived on the seventh floor, she saw that Chen Xujia was already seated and scrolling on her phone.
“Xujia, morning!”
“Morning.” Chen Xujia lifted her eyes from her phone and smiled at her.
After exchanging greetings, Chen Xujia lowered her head and continued looking at her phone. Then, as if something had suddenly occurred to her, she set the phone down and called out to Lin Luyao, who was about to go get some water.
“Luyao, wait a second!”
“Where are you living now? In the school dormitory, or are you renting a place outside on your own?”
Lin Luyao paused at the question, not understanding why Chen Xujia would suddenly ask her that.
“Uh, I live in the school dorm... Why?”
She could not help wondering whether the boss had really won some grand prize and was about to give the employees a perk—perhaps a housing allowance? Or maybe... was he planning to build staff apartments and starting a lottery now?
Before Lin Luyao could even allow herself a little secret delight, Chen Xujia went on.
“Then you’ll probably need to apply for a sleep pod tonight. Everyone has to work overtime, and conservatively speaking, it’ll be at least until one.”
“So late!”
Lin Luyao’s voice shot up at once.
“Ha, if it only ends at one, that would count as early. I heard that during the midyear promotion this year, the people upstairs pulled an all-nighter.”
