Shadows of Espionage in the Republic of China Era Seeking the Verdant Vine 546 words 2026-03-25 23:25:10

I have noticed many readers in the comments section expressing confusion over the protagonist’s decision to assist the Red Party, finding it inconceivable that a modern person, having traveled back to that war-torn era, would yearn to join the movement.

To be honest, one of the reasons I, the author, chose the codename "Shadow" for the protagonist is that, to a certain extent, he is a reflection of myself. Perhaps many of my younger readers are far apart from me in age, making it difficult for them to grasp the mindset of my generation.

I cannot speak for others, but as someone who has reached middle age, I recall the day years ago when I stood beneath the party flag to take my oath; there was a genuine, heartfelt sincerity in my heart.

It is true that such feelings have diminished—very much so—in the present day. But it would be dishonest to deny that they still exist. My father, now eighty years old, joined the Red Party in his youth. When the retirement office handles dues, they no longer actively request them from men of his age, yet my father insists on going to the office himself every single time to pay, never missing a single installment.

I know that for those who lived through that era, that sense of sincerity was far more loyal and infinitely purer.

Sometimes, I find it difficult to fully grasp their way of thinking myself. Times have changed, and the perspectives of each generation differ.

I understand the views of those readers who wish to drop the book because of the protagonist’s support for the Red Party, and I can only say that it is a great pity. I truly wished we could have journeyed together to the very end of this story, and I am deeply sorry that we cannot continue this path side by side.
