Chapter 127: Erasing the Magic Runes

Based on their ingratitude yesterday, Xu Cheng coldly collected the fee: two taels of silver to remove the demonic mark from one person.
Although not a large sum, it was enough to sustain a family of three for over half a month.
“You’re just robbing us!” one of the women exclaimed during the removal process.
“I spent half the day earnestly advising you yesterday, but you refused to come! However... you’re free to choose not to have the demonic mark removed!” Xu Cheng responded.
Boss Chi fully supported Xu Cheng’s decision to charge for the removal. On one hand, he resented these people’s ingratitude from the previous day; on the other, he had racked his brain last night for solutions in vain, exhausting his heart, mind, and strength, leaving him in a foul mood.
The once bustling tavern instantly fell silent.
At first, when numerous deaths occurred in town, the townsfolk merely minded their own business, unconcerned as long as they were safe. When they heard it was the work of demons, they kept their doors and windows tightly shut every day, fearing their lives would be taken. Only after hearing that the demons were dead—news spread by Boss Chi—did they venture out openly.
They considered these demonic marks nothing more than a scam to extort money!
Unexpectedly, another person died—none other than Tang Anning, a wealthy local landlord.
It was said Tang Anning was so rich that he hired several cultivator guards, yet he still died inexplicably. This unsettled the crowd immediately.
Early that morning, they gathered here.
“Um, sir, could you please lower the price? The person who died last night was my husband. We loved each other very much. He was fine during the day, but as soon as night fell, he turned into a skeleton—truly terrifying!” The woman who had spoken earlier sobbed, her words heart-wrenching and tear-inducing.
Unexpectedly, Xu Cheng’s act of defiance last night was to save this woman’s husband. Feeling a sudden softness, he was about to agree.
“Bah! You shameless woman! Lord Tang was already on his last legs. Don’t think we don’t know you keep several lovers!”
“Yes, everyone in the circles knows. And here you are, playing the sympathy card!”
“Charge her extra when you remove her demonic mark!”
Suddenly, someone pointed at her and cursed, and the crowd began shouting as well.
The woman was left utterly humiliated, powerless to defend herself.
No one had expected such a sudden turn of events.
“Quiet, you fools! You waste the time of your elders and your own lives. Who knows when these demonic marks will activate! If you don’t want to die, line up and pay quickly!” Boss Chi shouted, radiating a blue aura that revealed his cultivator identity.

His outburst truly intimidated those inside. Their eyes shone with disbelief, surprised that Boss Chi, who normally appeared like a streetwise rogue, was in fact a cultivator.
The crowd looked at Xu Cheng with fervent eyes, assuming he had guided Boss Chi in the cultivation path.
“Boss Chi, didn’t you say your sect doesn’t reveal its identity casually?” Xu Cheng wrapped his voice with spiritual power, sending it directly into Boss Chi’s ear.
Before Boss Chi could answer, the crowd obediently lined up and paid one by one, wanting Xu Cheng to remove their demonic marks.
“I, the Five-Grain Dao, have my own methods!” Boss Chi whispered to Xu Cheng as he worked.
Xu Cheng nodded subtly and focused on the demonic marks on their bodies.
Boss Chi collected the money while Xu Cheng removed the marks; the two worked seamlessly together. By the end of the morning, they had cleared all the demonic marks.
The money box was full—thirteen hundred taels of silver—and Boss Chi wore a broad smile.
The task was complete, yet the crowd did not leave.
Xu Cheng was puzzled. “It’s done! Why are you still here?”
A handsome young man stepped forward. “Sir, what do you think of my aptitude? Could I learn one or two spells?”
His request stunned not only Xu Cheng but also Boss Chi.
“Look at yourself! Besides your looks, what makes you think you’re fit to learn the lord’s spells?” someone sneered before Boss Chi could reply.
“Pig butcher, with your daily pig slaughtering, you want to learn the lord’s spells too?” the young scholar retorted sharply.
The crowd grew rowdy, and Xu Cheng said nothing. If they saw his true form, they would likely scatter in terror.
At that moment, two young men entered from outside, followed by a tall, upright figure. It was clear these three were cultivators, though the two youths were of low cultivation compared to the one behind them.
“Madam, this is our master!” the two announced as they parted the crowd and revealed the tall figure behind them, then addressed Tang Anning’s widow.
The tall man did not look at Madam Tang but instead scrutinized Xu Cheng.
By sensing, Xu Cheng knew this man was at the Primordial Spirit realm, though he could not determine his exact sub-level.

“Master...” the man in front tugged at the collar of the person facing Xu Cheng.
“Not in public, don’t be pulling and tugging! May I ask which sect you belong to, fellow Daoist?” the tall man replied, ignoring his apprentice and Madam Tang.
An amused thought rose in Xu Cheng’s mind. Turning sideways, he said, “I am the Messenger of the Yellow Springs. The Black and White Impermanence are my subordinates!”
He withdrew the minor Five Elements Protection Technique, revealing a skeletal form with glowing red eyes and a green tongue.
The man was startled, but the others were so frightened they could not move. The young scholar even wet himself.
“Why, didn’t you all want to learn my spells?” Xu Cheng looked at the terrified crowd.
“So, you are the Messenger of the Yellow Springs! Does that mean the strange occurrences here have been subdued by you?” the tall man asked, regaining composure.
During the exchange, Xu Cheng discreetly asked Boss Chi about the man’s sect.
He was from the Celestial Secrets Pavilion. The two youths behind him were merely lay disciples, barely connected to him.
“Actually, it’s not as you think. This matter was orchestrated by members of the Black Lotus Sect colluding with the Azure Mountain Sword Sect to frame the Gu Huo Niao who lives nearby. That Gu Huo Niao doesn’t eat people; it merely cultivates silently!” Xu Cheng, knowing the tall man was not from the Azure Mountain Sword Sect, revealed the truth.
“Is that true?” the man asked excitedly.
“True! I never lie,” Xu Cheng answered.
The man’s excitement puzzled Xu Cheng.
“No wonder our plans have always been leaked to the Xia Dynasty. Turns out the Azure Mountain Sword Sect has long colluded with the Xia Dynasty—truly detestable!” the young man exclaimed in sudden realization.
From this, Xu Cheng inferred the man was likely from the Han Empire.
