Chapter 26 Cause of Death
Just as my cousin was about to tell me something about Sun Wenwen, a voluptuous woman appeared at the door and cleared her throat.
This woman had once left a deep impression on me—the kind one doesn’t forget easily, for I’d been given quite a beating by her. She was none other than Policewoman Su Wanyi.
But today, she was out of uniform, wearing a set of tight black clothes that accentuated her curvaceous figure.
I hadn’t expected Su Wanyi to be so well-informed. She strode in as if she were returning to her own home.
“Hello, Chu Yun! We meet again,” she greeted me with a smile.
My cousin was left dumbfounded once more. She couldn’t fathom how I had come to know these people.
I didn’t bother explaining. Instead, I pulled Su Wanyi aside and whispered in her ear, “Why are you here?”
She shot me a glare. “Why shouldn’t I be here?”
After a while, my cousin recovered her composure and noticed me whispering with Su Wanyi.
She called me over and asked, “When did you start making these kinds of friends? And who is this?”
For a moment, I was at a loss for words. Then, a flash of inspiration struck me. “She’s… an online friend of mine.”
“An online friend?” My cousin eyed Su Wanyi.
Su Wanyi played along, nodding politely to my cousin.
My cousin cast a sidelong glance at me, then beckoned me outside.
Once outdoors, her tone turned serious. “Let me warn you, Lin Weiyan is a fine girl—pretty, too. Be content with what you have and stop meeting these so-called online friends.”
It seemed she had truly misunderstood.
“Oh, my dear cousin, how am I supposed to explain this to you? Never mind, forget it.”
She continued, “Is there anything you can’t tell me? I never realized you had such charm.”
I was speechless. “Enough, you’ll understand eventually. Let’s go back in.”
“I’ll leave you all to it. Have fun,” she replied, declining to return inside. Then she added, “I just came to check on you and tell you that Sun Wenwen is dead. The night you were discharged from the hospital, I heard her heart was cut out. And listen—try not to go out at night if you can help it, alright?”
I nodded. “Don’t worry, I won’t go anywhere at night. Take care on the road, cousin. I won’t see you off.”
As I watched her leave, her words about Sun Wenwen’s heart being cut out left me with a sense of dread.
Suddenly, I remembered the time in the Forest of Ten Thousand Demons, when the Crimson-Eyed Demon Eye took control of my body.
Could it really have been me who killed Sun Wenwen? The more I thought about it, the more terrified I became.
Uneasy, I returned to the rented apartment. Su Wanyi was chatting with Lin Weiyan, while Feng Zimo was fighting with Xiaoling over some food, causing Xiaoling to pout angrily.
Seeing me come in, Lin Weiyan asked, “Where’s your cousin?”
I didn’t answer, my mind still preoccupied with whether I had killed Sun Wenwen.
“What’s wrong with you?” Su Wanyi kicked me in the rear.
“What are you doing? Can’t you see I’m thinking?” I retorted, rubbing the spot she’d kicked. She never held back.
It made me wonder if she had a violent streak.
“If I could read your mind, I wouldn’t have to come find you,” Su Wanyi replied.
“So what do you want?” I asked.
She went straight to the point. “Old Jiang is no longer with us. This case can only rely on you now.”
Even if Su Wanyi hadn’t said so, I would have wanted to uncover the truth behind Sun Wenwen’s death. But now I was filled with dread, afraid I would find myself to be the murderer.
Worried as I was, I agreed to help and learned a few things from Su Wanyi.
Sun Wenwen’s heart had indeed been removed, and so far, there were no clues—except that I’d been seen at the scene of her death.
“Can you take us to the scene again?” I asked.
“No problem,” Su Wanyi replied.
After a hasty meal, we headed to the company.
Thanks to Su Wanyi, we entered smoothly.
As we walked down the corridor, I suddenly recalled something.
When Lin Weiyan saved me that day, she’d said, “If he comes later, even I won’t be able to save you.”
At the time, I’d thought she meant Old Jiang, but now I realized it must have been someone else.
So I asked her, “That day—who did you mean by ‘he’?”
“I’m not sure,” Lin Weiyan replied. “But according to Old Jiang, that person is extremely powerful. We’re not his match.”
Could there really be such a person in this world? If even Lin Weiyan and Old Jiang weren’t his equals, could he still be called human? Most likely, he was a demon.
Soon, we reached the rooftop without encountering anything unusual.
Su Wanyi pointed to an empty spot. “That’s where Sun Wenwen’s body was found.”
I gazed at the spot, recalling the events of that night.
I clearly remembered standing at the edge of the rooftop, about five meters from where her body had been found.
At such a short distance, if her body had been there, I couldn’t possibly have missed it. Was there an issue with the timing?
I asked Su Wanyi, “Based on the forensic examination, can you determine the exact time of Sun Wenwen’s death?”
Then I added, “Also, was there any surveillance footage of her coming up here?”
“According to the forensic report, she died at the same time you appeared here,” Su Wanyi said. “But the surveillance seemed to be interfered with. All we got were a few shots of you.”
No wonder, I thought, she was so sure I did it during the interrogation.
If what Su Wanyi said was true, I started to suspect someone was setting me up.
But I soon dismissed the idea. If someone really wanted me dead, wouldn’t it be easier to stage an accident or just kill me outright, rather than go to all this trouble?
If not to frame me, then what was the real purpose behind killing Sun Wenwen?
And why had she, a young woman, come here alone in the middle of the night? From what I knew of her, she’d never have the courage—unless she’d been brought here by force or killed elsewhere and her body moved.
So many theories ran through my mind, but none seemed to make sense.
Just as I was growing ever more confused, a sudden image flashed through my mind.
The spot where Sun Wenwen’s body was found—wasn’t that the very place where the weasel’s body had vanished?
With that thought, a bold suspicion began to take shape within me.
