Chapter Thirty-One: Sun Wenwen
Hearing Su Wanyi say this, I replied to her,
“I did say that Sun Wenwen might not be dead, but it was only a suspicion.”
“A suspicion? Why do you suspect that?” Su Wanyi pressed.
I said, “I have a feeling that Sun Wenwen might actually be a transformed weasel. Do you remember yesterday, when you mentioned where you found Sun Wenwen’s body? I clearly recall that, after I killed the weasel, it disappeared right at that spot.”
“That’s all? You think Sun Wenwen might not be dead just because of that?” Su Wanyi said.
I shook my head. “No, that alone isn’t enough. Isn’t there something you all haven’t noticed?”
Hearing this, Su Wanyi looked at me, her face full of confusion.
“What is it?”
I pointed at Sun Wenwen’s corpse.
“Look at her nails—sharp, long, and a bit yellow.”
“That’s it?” Su Wanyi said, speechless.
I nodded. Beside me, Lin Weiyan spoke up.
“Brother Chu Yun is right. This corpse is Huang San, not Sun Wenwen.”
With that, Lin Weiyan pointed at the corpse, and a beam of light shot forth.
Sun Wenwen’s body transformed before our eyes into a large yellow weasel.
I instantly recognized it—it was indeed Huang San.
But now, Huang San was dead. Although Su Wanyi had long known that monsters existed in this world,
witnessing this scene left her utterly shocked.
Her body instinctively retreated a step and she asked,
“If this isn’t Sun Wenwen, then where did the real Sun Wenwen go?”
Just then, Su Wanyi’s phone rang.
“What? Where? Alright, I’ll come right away.”
After a few brief words, Su Wanyi hung up.
She turned to us, her face still filled with shock.
“While reviewing surveillance footage, we found someone who looks exactly like Sun Wenwen. I suspect that person is her.”
“Where is she?” I asked.
Su Wanyi replied, “On a bus headed for the suburbs.”
A bus?
A sudden sense of foreboding gripped me. I felt that Sun Wenwen might still be Huang San.
The reason for this suspicion was that Huang San’s heart had disappeared; the only possibility was that it had entered Sun Wenwen’s body.
The more I thought about it, the more uneasy I grew, so I said,
“We should go there immediately.”
We left the morgue, and Su Wanyi drove the police car, taking us away at breakneck speed.
The siren howled all the way.
Passing vehicles quickly moved aside.
Soon, we were in the suburbs. To be honest, I admired Su Wanyi’s driving skills.
Ahead, on an empty asphalt road, a blue bus appeared.
Sun Wenwen was on that bus.
Su Wanyi pressed the accelerator, picking up speed.
As the distance closed, I could see many passengers on board.
But, inexplicably, the bus suddenly sped up as well,
as if it knew someone was chasing it from behind.
Su Wanyi gritted her teeth, pressing the pedal as far as it would go. “Is that driver doing this on purpose?”
Whether the driver was intentional or not, the bus could never outrun a police car.
Unrelenting, we overtook the bus and flashed the lights, signaling the driver to stop.
But the bus driver ignored us, showing no intention to stop.
Su Wanyi, unwilling to accept this, accelerated and abruptly braked, blocking the road with the police car.
She opened the door, skillfully drew her pistol, and aimed at the approaching bus.
We got out as well, but even then, the bus showed no sign of slowing down.
It was about to crash into us.
“Everyone, move!”
I shouted, pushing Su Wanyi aside, and Lin Weiyan and the others darted to the roadside.
With a deafening crash,
the bus smashed mercilessly into the police car.
The bus then stalled, wisps of black smoke rising from it.
Su Wanyi strode forward, gun pointed at the bus driver.
“Get out!”
But unexpectedly, the driver ignored her, sitting blankly at the wheel.
“Did you hear me? I said get out!”
Su Wanyi repeated.
Lin Weiyan said, “No need to call any longer. Not a single person on this bus is alive.”
“What did you say?” I asked.
Lin Weiyan replied, “Everyone on this bus is dead—and has been for a long time.”
Then Feng Zimo added,
“That’s right. Their life force has all been drained.”
“Dead, yet still driving? Where are they going?” I asked.
Lin Weiyan shook her head, and Feng Zimo said,
“You should ask Sun Wenwen, who’s on the bus.”
Feng Zimo shouted,
“Get down here! Are you waiting for me to take action?”
As soon as he spoke, Sun Wenwen slowly stepped out from the bus.
Seeing Feng Zimo, her body trembled uncontrollably.
“Tell us, where are you all going? Did you kill these people?” Feng Zimo asked coldly.
Sun Wenwen seemed terrified of him, her body shaking more and more violently.
I knew this Sun Wenwen was no longer herself—her body had been commandeered, just an empty shell.
Yet I couldn’t help feeling sorry for her. She had cared for me when I was hospitalized, tirelessly looking after me.
I truly hoped she could survive. As long as there was a sliver of hope, I wouldn’t give up.
Seeing her silent, I spoke up.
“You don’t need to be afraid. I know you’re Huang San. If you honestly answer a few questions, I might let you go.”
Su Wanyi heard me and turned,
“Let him go? Are you mad? He’s killed so many.”
I ignored her and continued speaking to Huang San inside Sun Wenwen’s body.
“I’ll give you three seconds to decide. If you don’t speak by the time I count to three, don’t blame me for what happens next.”
Then I began to count.
“One…”
“Two…”
Just as I was about to say “three,” Huang San inside Sun Wenwen’s body spoke.
“Will you really let me go?”
Now that he spoke, things would be easier.
“Of course! Provided you tell the truth,” I said.
Huang San replied,
“Alright, I’ll be honest.”
“My first question: Is the original owner of this body still alive?”
Huang San nodded.
“Not dead yet, but soon.”
Hearing that Sun Wenwen was still alive meant there was hope.
So I continued,
“My second question: Were you responsible for the deaths of the factory workers? Was anyone behind it, giving orders?”
When answering this, Huang San hesitated, but finally spoke.
